If a birthday is wrong on iPhone, correct the record that supplies the date rather than the screen where you noticed it. For most birthdays shown in Apple's built-in Birthdays calendar, that source is the person's Contacts card.
Open the contact, correct the birthday, tap Done, and reopen the card to verify it. If Calendar still shows the wrong date, check for another contact card or a manually created annual event. An iCloud birthday correction may take until the next day to appear.
Identify which birthday record is wrong
An iPhone can hold several unrelated records that all look like a birthday:

Apple documents the Apple Account birthday as an account setting used for features such as Family Sharing. It is separate from birthday fields on other people's contact cards.
If the wrong date appears in the Calendar entry labeled as a birthday from Contacts, begin with Contacts. If it appears as an ordinary event in one of your personal calendars, edit that event instead.
Correct the birthday on the contact card
Apple's current Contacts instructions use a simple edit-and-save flow:
- Open Contacts.
- Find and select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the birthday field and choose the correct date.
- Tap Done.
- Reopen the contact and confirm the saved month, day, and year.
The verification step separates a Contacts problem from a Calendar problem. If the card still contains the wrong date, Calendar has not yet entered the troubleshooting path.
Do not invent a birth year merely to complete the field. If you know only the month and day, use a yearless date when the birthday picker and the contact's account preserve it, then reopen the card to verify the result.

Check for a duplicate contact with a conflicting date
Two cards for the same person can hold different birthdays. Correcting one does not prove that the other is accurate.
If View Duplicates appears below My Card in Contacts:
- Tap View Duplicates.
- Open each suggested match and compare the names, phone numbers, email addresses, account sources, and birthdays.
- Merge only cards that represent the same person.
- Reopen the resulting contact and verify its birthday.
Apple says this automatic check finds cards with the same first and last name. It may therefore miss a nickname, changed surname, or different spelling. Search by phone number and email if you suspect another card.
You can also open one card, tap Edit > Link Contacts, and select the other card. Apple distinguishes linking from merging: linked cards remain in their source accounts but appear as one unified contact. Changes made to the unified contact are copied to source accounts where that information already exists.
After merging or linking, verify the birthday again. Do not assume the conflict was resolved merely because the two cards now appear together.
Confirm the corrected date in Calendar
Apple's Birthdays calendar includes birthdays from Contacts with your other events.
After fixing the contact:
- Open Calendar.
- Tap Calendars.
- Make sure Birthdays is selected.
- Swipe down on the calendar list to refresh events.
- Check the corrected month and day.
Apple states that the iCloud Birthdays calendar on iPhone updates daily. A birthday changed today may therefore remain unchanged in Calendar until the next day. That documented delay applies specifically to iCloud birthdays, not automatically to every Google, Exchange, or other account.

Diagnose a birthday that is one day off
First determine where the one-day difference begins:
- Wrong in both Contacts and Calendar: correct the Contacts field and verify that it saves.
- Correct in Contacts but wrong in Calendar: check the contact's source account, Calendar refresh, and the relevant sync period.
- Wrong only in a manual event: edit that Calendar event.
- Wrong only in another app: correct or replace that app's separate record.
Apple includes correct device date and time among its basic Contacts and Calendar sync checks. Open Settings > General > Date & Time and confirm the iPhone is using the correct date, time, and time zone for your location.
Apple also has an archived article about an iOS 12 defect that made some Exchange contact birthdays appear one day off. Updating to iOS 12.2 and downloading the Exchange contacts again was the fix at that time. This is historical guidance, not a current fix. Do not remove and redownload current Exchange contacts solely because of that archived article. For a present-day account-specific pattern, install current iOS updates and follow current advice from Apple or your Exchange administrator.
Correct a manually created birthday event
A normal recurring Calendar event is independent of a Contacts birthday.
To change it:
- Open Calendar and select the event.
- Tap Edit.
- Correct the date or other event details.
- Tap Done.
If the same person also has a birthday in Contacts, both records can appear. Choose which record should be authoritative, then remove or correct the extra event only after confirming what it contains.
Editing the manual event does not alter the contact card. Editing the contact card does not alter a separate manual event.
Find which Contacts account owns the card
Contacts can display records from iCloud, Google, Exchange, Yahoo, and other configured accounts.
To locate the source:
- Open Contacts and tap Lists.
- Select All iCloud and search for the person.
- Return to Lists and check each other enabled account.
- Open every matching card and compare its birthday.
Apple documents Default Account as the destination for new contacts. Changing it does not move an existing card to another account.
If one account repeatedly restores an old date, correct the record in the account that owns it rather than creating another contact. For an organization-managed account, ask its administrator before deleting or disabling anything.
Keep other birthday records accurate
Correcting Apple Contacts does not necessarily update a birthday copied into another app.
If you previously imported the person into Birthday Reminder or another dedicated app, open that app and verify its stored date after changing Contacts. Do not assume that a past import creates continuous synchronization. Check for an existing app record before importing again so you do not create another copy.

Why does the same person appear on two dates?
Look for two contact cards with different birthdays and for a separate annual Calendar event. Check Contacts > Lists as well as the Calendar event before deleting either record.
Can I edit a Contacts birthday directly in Calendar?
