To turn on the Birthdays calendar on iPhone, open Calendar, tap Calendars at the bottom of the screen, select Birthdays, and tap Done. Apple Calendar will then include birthdays saved in Contacts with your other events.

Turn on the Birthdays calendar

Understand the three parts of the setup
Birthday visibility on iPhone involves three separate controls:
- Source data: The birthday saved on a contact card.
- Calendar visibility: Whether Birthdays is selected in the Calendars list.
- Notifications: The default birthday alert and Calendar notification permission.
This separation explains most confusion. Selecting Birthdays cannot display a date that is absent from Contacts. A visible birthday also does not prove that an alert is configured or allowed to appear.
Treat each part as a separate check rather than repeatedly turning the same option off and on.
Confirm that birthdays appear
After selecting Birthdays, check a person whose date you know.
If the name appears correctly, no further display setup is required. Calendar is reading the birthday field from Contacts and including it in the selected view.
If the person is missing:
- Open Contacts.
- Select the person.
- Tap Edit.
- Look for the birthday field.
- Add or correct the date, then tap Done.
Return to Calendar and check the relevant date again. Apple documents the contact card as the place to add or update a birthday.

Set birthday alerts separately
Selecting Birthdays controls visibility. To choose the default alert for the Birthdays category:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Calendar.
- Tap Default Alert Times.
- Tap Birthdays.
- Choose an available alert option.
Apple provides separate defaults for Birthdays, Events, and All-Day Events. Changing the regular event setting therefore does not configure the birthday default.
This screen sets a default for the Birthdays category rather than offering a separate schedule for each contact. If one person needs a same-day prompt and another needs a week of preparation, use an additional reminder system.

Check Calendar notification permission
Even with a birthday alert selected, Calendar needs permission to deliver notifications.
Open Settings > Notifications > Calendar and confirm that Allow Notifications is on. Choose at least one place for alerts to appear, such as the Lock Screen, Notification Center, or banners. Turn on sounds if you expect an audible alert.
Keep these two checks distinct:
- Default Alert Times > Birthdays decides when Calendar should alert you.
- Notifications > Calendar decides whether iPhone may show the alert.
If the birthday appears but no alert arrives, the problem is not the Birthdays display toggle. Check both notification controls and make sure the selected alert time has not already passed.
Turn Birthdays off without deleting dates
To hide the calendar again, return to Calendar > Calendars, deselect Birthdays, and tap Done.
This removes birthday entries from the current Calendar display. It does not erase the birthday fields in Contacts. Select Birthdays again whenever you want the entries to reappear.
That makes the toggle useful when a work calendar feels crowded. You can temporarily hide birthdays without changing anyone's contact card or rebuilding the list later.
To hide only one person's birthday, edit that person's contact card instead. The Birthdays selection controls the entire calendar layer, not individual people.
Know why the Birthdays calendar cannot be shared
Apple's official sharing instructions apply to iCloud calendars that you create. In Calendar, you tap the Info button beside an iCloud calendar and use Add Person to invite someone.
The built-in Birthdays calendar is different because Calendar generates it from your Contacts. An Apple Community reply addressing this exact question says the Birthdays calendar itself cannot be shared.
The reply suggests two alternatives:
- Create a separate iCloud calendar, add birthday events manually, and share that calendar.
- Share contact cards so the recipient has the birthday information in Contacts.
Use the second option carefully. Apple notes that sharing a contact sends the information on that contact card, so review the card before sending it.
For a household-wide calendar, the manual shared-calendar method gives everyone one visible list. The trade-off is that you must maintain those recurring events separately from Contacts.
Fix an empty or missing Birthdays calendar
Two symptoms need different responses.
Birthdays is listed but no dates appear
Confirm that at least one contact visible in the Contacts app has a saved birthday. If only one person is missing, inspect that contact rather than changing the whole calendar.
The Birthdays row is absent
Apple documents how to select the row but does not publish one guaranteed repair for a row that is completely absent. Start with low-risk checks: reopen Calendar, refresh Contacts, restart the iPhone, and install any available iOS update.

Decide whether the built-in calendar is enough
Apple Calendar is a good fit when your birthdays already live in Contacts and one shared birthday alert choice meets your needs. It requires little ongoing work and keeps birthdays beside your other events.
Its limits become noticeable when different people need different preparation times or when you want birthday-specific planning tools.
